Our School

Barwaaqo University is creating life-long change for women in Somaliland. In a country where women's unemployment is well over 80%, almost all of our graduates have found stable, high-paying jobs within 3 months of graduates. Barwaaqo offers degrees in education and communications, filling a crucial gender gap - fewer than 10% of teachers in Somaliland are women.

Our courses include ESL, math, technology, education and communications. Many of our teachers are in at least two of these departments.

Our Context

Barwaaqo University is located in Somaliland, the independent but unrecognized country in the Horn of Africa. Somaliland has had peaceful transfers of power in democratically elected governments since it declared independence from Somalia in 1999. However, poverty rates and unemployment rates are sky high while life expectancy and school attendance is low.

Teacher Responsibilities

Barwaaqo faculty work hard to improve our students' academic success, as well as their soft-skills, confidence, and professionalism. They provide an extraordinary opportunity for young women to learn, grow and develop the skills needed to succeed in the workplace. Teachers have 18 hours per week of classroom teaching with another 30+ hours of extra-curricular responsibilities including advising, office hours, clubs, sports, and administrative duties.

Compensation

Compensation packages include monthly stipends that varies based on experience and scope of work, room and board, round-trip airfare, health insurance and bonuses for those who stay beyond one year. Teacher-leaders receive additional stipends.
