Job Purpose:

The Lecturer for Discipline-based Academic Language and Skills will be responsible for designing and delivering academic language and skills programs and courses that are discipline-specific. The role holder will work closely with other faculty members to provide support to students in developing academic language and skills necessary for success in their respective disciplines.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

1. Develop and design discipline-specific academic language and skills programs and courses that align with the requirements of the respective disciplines.
2. Deliver high-quality academic language and skills instruction, including teaching discipline-specific academic writing, research skills, critical thinking, and communication skills to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
3. Develop and maintain constructive relationships with other faculty members to ensure that academic language and skills programs and courses align with the requirements of the respective disciplines.
4. Participate in the development and implementation of assessment practices that measure students’ academic language and skills progress and achievement.
5. Provide academic and pastoral support to students, including advising on academic and research-related matters, assisting with academic writing, and providing feedback on academic assignments.
6. Contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of academic language and skills programs and courses, through research and professional development activities.
7. Maintain accurate records of student progress and assessment, and ensure timely and accurate feedback to students.
8. Engage in scholarly activities, including research, publication, and conference presentations, to contribute to the academic community and enhance the reputation of the institution.

Qualifications and Experience:

1. A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline with a focus on academic writing and/or English language teaching.
2. Experience in designing and delivering discipline content courses in a higher education context.
3. Demonstrated ability to teach discipline-specific academic writing, research skills, critical thinking, and communication skills.
4. Knowledge of current pedagogical approaches and practices related to academic language and skills instruction.
5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff.
6. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities.
7. A commitment to ongoing professional development and scholarship.
8. Experience working with diverse student populations and a commitment to promoting inclusivity and diversity in higher education.
9. Knowledge of relevant technologies and digital tools for academic language and skills instruction.
